Lose Weight

You're a winner even if you lose and gain it back

Have you been trying to lose weight, but not finding much success? What have you tried to lose weight? Have you tried fad diets? There are a lot of them out there. Have they worked? Perhaps. Did you enjoy the benefits of long-term weight loss, or was it short-term? I'm guessing short-term, and I'd also bet that you gained the weight that you lost back.

You are not alone. According to the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" more than 90% of successful "losers" have previously failed in their weight loss efforts. Many after having lost, ended up regaining the weight and in most cases they gain back more than they lost -- the net effect being they are actually heavier than they started out at!

Those numbers are not shocking. I'm in that 90% -- I've tried everything, and looked for the magic pill to help with permanent weight loss, but there isn't one. No magic pill. No miracle patch. Unless you are morbidly obese, and the doctor recommends drastic weight loss methods such as surgery then you've got to "master" weight loss. Just because you've gained your weight back does not mean that you've failed, rather you've learned some important lessons. I will explain...

Alison Fiels, Sc.D., an assistant professor ar Harvard Medical School says that "It's never too late to try again to lose and control your weight.". In fact, the more often you try and fail the greater the chance you will succeed the next time. That is my story. I tried, and tried, and tried. Nothing worked. But little did I realize that I had an arsenal of experience behind me -- what worked, and what did not. What types of exercise best helped me to tone and firm. What did I enjoy doing, and what was boring. All these experiences combined helped me propel my weight loss to lose a staggering 100lbs within one year!

Now don't think that failing is the key to losing weight. Yo-yo dieting is just as bad for you. If you're failing at losing weight, don't throw what you've learned away (would you throw away the baby with the bath water?). Do something useful with the information that you've gathered over your previous weight loss endeavors. In fact "Individuals struggling with weight control can benefit significantly by reviewing issues that contributed to their weight gain and stragegices that helped them succeed int he past," said Vincent Pera Jr. M.D., Medical Director of the Weight Management Program at the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I.

Giving up is not a option. You should keep trying, because you will get the results you want. Trust me. I am living proof. I tried everything to lose weight, and lost but gained it back. I just keep at it. I may gain 5lbs and as soon as I feel that weight gain I know I'm off-track and start watching what I'm doing to correct myself.

I can honestly attribute my weight loss to having reviewed and analyzed my past dieting experiences. In fact, Pera says the same thing in that "About 30 to 40 percent of success of controlling weight has to do with the review and analysis of past dieting experiences.". YOU hold the key to successful weight loss.

Let me give you a few examples.

We all know that eating a large bag of nachos is a no-no. Empty calories, and LOTS OF FAT. While this is common sense for most people, it didn't come that easy for me. I thought "Hey, I didn't eat all day. I can eat a bag of chips -- no problem.". That was the problem. Today, I portion out a bag of nachos. I eat healthy meals and keep 10-15 nachos as my "treat". I still need comfort food, and I'm sure you do as well.

Here is another example. I love bread. I can easily eat 4 or 6 slices during breakfast. But have you seen the number of calories in one slice of bread? It can be shocking! So instead I hunted for thinly sliced bread (this is like taking a normal slice of bread and slicing it in half) and will eat 4 slices at breakfast (which is about two "regular" slices of bread. You see this was more of a psychological point for me. My body is used to eating LOTS of food, so I have to "trick" it into thinking it is getting A LOT of food.

So how can you connect to the past? In the conclusion of this article, next month, I'll show you exactly what you need to do TODAY to connect to YESTERDAY to help you achieve permanent weight loss. I can say honestly that if you use the tips and techniques that I show you all you have to say to yourself is "how much weight do I want to lose?" and you will lose that weight. No more trying to lose weight. I will teach you how to lose weight, once and for all.
